Profile:

I joined the University of Manchester in 1996 and from within Sociology have taught in the areas of development, gender, ‘race’ and post colonialism. My teaching and research have continued to engage with a number of areas of the social sciences which cross both spatial and disciplinary boundaries. Having lived many years in the U.S., then doing my postgraduate education in Britain, and then focusing most of my research in India, my selection of conceptual tools largely reflects my own intellectual journey. I have an interdisciplinary background with a BA in Political Science from Vassar College, an MA in Area Studies, South Asia (SOAS/London) and a PhD in Development Studies (Lancaster). Much of my current teaching and research continue to strive to maintain interdisciplinarity in addressing a range of questions within the social sciences.

I have had a number of collaborative international links, including a joint project on the politics of population policy in India (Delhi School of Economics, India). I have also done some consultancy work on gender and the higher education curriculum.
